Golden Eye Clinic was founded in May 1978 by Dixon Golden, O.D.
Dr. Golden began visiting Shelby County as a child, as his grandfather, W. R. Swanzy lived in Center.

Dr. Golden opened his doors in May 1978 and hired one staff member. He saw a need for primary eye care in Shelby County and the practice began to grow. His first office was located next to Shelby Regional Hospital. In 1981, he married Melody Bailey and shortly thereafter they build a new clinic at the current location at 702 Louisiana Street. At that time they had about 6 employees.

The practice continued to grow and in 1994, the building was expanded to over 6,000 square feet and five exam rooms. At that time there were 10 staff members. Robert P. Lehmann, M.D. joined the consulting staff as an independent physician seeing patients at Golden Eye Clinic.

In the Spring of 2002, Golden Eye Clinic became affiliated as a teaching clinic for The University of Houston College of Optometry. Dr. Golden holds the rank of adjunct clinical professor of optometry and has help train over 20 optometric interns.

In 2008, Dr. Carmen Mackey joined the staff of Golden Eye Clinic. Another major remodel project was completed in that year adding 2 more exam rooms which now makes a total of 7 fully equipped ophthalmic exam rooms. Golden Eye Clinic continues to stay on the cutting edge of the latest technology which includes Optos, fundus photography, topography, GDX, OCT, B-scans, anterior segment photography and endothelial cell counts. In 2008, Neil Brogden, O.D., an optometric retinal specialist also joined the staff of Golden Eye Clinic and he sees patients on a monthly basis. Currently Golden Eye Clinic has 4 doctors and 16 other staff members.
